Regardless of what you call them, almost everyone knows steamed dumplings—also known as steamed buns or steamed yeast buns. They’re a great idea for a ready-to-serve main course or a side dish. These well-known yeast-dough dumplings can be served sweet with fruit and sour cream, or a bit lighter with yogurt. They also taste great served savory with sauce, meat, or vegetables—however you prefer. One thing is certain—making them is not rocket science. What’s more, one batch is enough for two meals, which is a plus for those who don’t like standing over pots every day. So what’s the secret of this dish?

As the name suggests, steam is crucial throughout the whole process of cooking these buns. That’s why you need a special steamer or a piece of gauze or muslin that you can tie over a regular pot so the dumplings can steam just above the water level.
Below you’ll find a recipe for steamed buns with blueberries. This sweet version will appeal even to the pickiest little eaters. Blueberries, a vitamin powerhouse, are a great way to supplement a child’s diet with essential nutrients. They’re also recommended for older people, who often struggle with high blood pressure. The choice of toppings for the buns is up to you. They also taste excellent on their own.

Preparation:

Sift the flour into a bowl and add the yeast (dry yeast does not require making a starter). Then gradually pour in the warm milk, add the melted butter, crack in the eggs, and add the sugar and salt. Knead the dough thoroughly and set it aside to rise for at least 60 minutes, until doubled in volume.

Once the dough has risen, transfer it to a floured board, gently roll it out to a thickness of about 2 cm, and cut out circles using a glass or another round utensil. Place blueberries in the center and shape into balls.

Bring the water in the pot you will use to cook the dumplings to a boil and place a batch of dumplings over it. Whether it’s a dedicated steamer pot or a regular one with gauze secured on top, steam covered for 10 minutes. The water must be boiling the entire time.
