Grissini is a type of Italian bread in the form of narrow sticks. This bread is made from yeasted dough. Grissini has been produced according to a special recipe since the 14th century (source: Wikipedia).
You can also prepare this simple, quick, tasty, and crunchy snack, which can take on different characters depending on the add-ins and spices used. Breadsticks work not only as a treat with drinks, a cheese board, or a charcuterie plate, but also as an alternative to bread served with soups. Enjoy them with a dip or a salad; for children we recommend serving them with sweet homemade jam or preserves. One recipe, so many possibilities!
Preparation
Dry yeast:
Sift the flour through a sieve, add salt, dry yeast, and sugar—mix, then add olive oil and milk. Knead thoroughly and set aside for an hour in a warm place.
Fresh yeast:
Add the yeast and sugar to warm milk. Stir and leave for 10 minutes. Sift the flour into a bowl, add salt, oil, and the yeast starter. Knead thoroughly and set aside for an hour in a warm place.
After this time, knead the dough—at this point you can add a little of your favorite add-ins and spices. Here are our suggestions, which you can put together yourself or use ready-made blends:
GRISSINI THE ITALIAN WAY: a teaspoon of white sesame, a teaspoon of black sesame, a teaspoon of nigella seeds, a teaspoon of rosemary, a teaspoon of oregano, a teaspoon of dried basil;
GRISSINI FOR BEER: Traditional for ham cooker - herb and spice blend (black pepper, dried onion, granulated garlic, marjoram, allspice, nutmeg, herbal pepper, chili).
When the dough is ready, cut it into small pieces, then roll them into thin rods and cut to the desired length. Arrange the sticks on a greased baking tray and leave to rise. You can now sprinkle the sticks again with seeds and spices. Finally, brush them with beaten egg. Place in an oven preheated to 200 °C and bake for 10 – 15 minutes.
The baked sticks can be wrapped with Parma ham, arugula, or strips of cheese.
