Knowing your soil pH makes it much easier to plan and then maintain optimal growing conditions. Most garden plants grow best in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). In this range, beneficial microorganisms thrive and nutrients are readily available to plant roots. In soil that’s too acidic, helpful bacteria die off and molds develop, and many minerals form water-insoluble compounds.

Moisture measurement:

• Set the slider to the moisture setting (MOIST)
• Insert the metal tip of the moisture meter into the soil to about 3/4 of the soil depth (work very gently to avoid damaging the meter and the plant’s roots)
• Moisture is measured by the sensors located on the metal tips.
• Read the value on the device scale and compare it with the recommended moisture level for the specific plant.

pH measurement:

• Prepare a one-time soil sample, ideally taken from several spots (300 - 400 g), removing stones, grass blades, roots, leaves, etc.
• Pour the soil into a 0.5 L jar, add water to make a slurry. Set the slider to the pH setting.
• Carefully clean the meter tip with coarse paper or a small brush and insert the probe into the prepared medium.
• Take the reading from the device scale after 60 seconds.

To lower soil pH, add sulfur; to raise it, add lime. Because the amount depends on your soil type, consult reliable gardening guides when choosing application rates. Use lower doses of sulfur (or lime) for light soils low in organic matter, and higher doses for fertile, humus-rich soils. You can maintain the correct soil pH by using appropriate fertilizers.
