Homemade strawberry, raspberry, and sour cherry jam, real butter, and fresh, crunchy bread make an ideal breakfast. A fluffy, yeast-raised wheat dough in the form of a braided loaf, also known as challah, can be made with just a few ingredients. Choose the additions you like and enjoy their flavor with your loved ones. The braid served with jam, butter, or honey also works as a sweet afternoon snack for children. Everyone who loves the buttery flavor of this bake will be delighted with challah, which you can additionally decorate with streusel, sesame, or poppy seeds. Paired with a mug of cocoa, it makes a perfect duo for cooler, rainy days.

Recipe for a fluffy yeast challah

Preparation:

  1. Melt the butter and let it cool.
  2. Prepare a large bowl and sift approx. 800 g of flour into it, add the yeast, sugar, and salt, and mix everything thoroughly.
  3. Next, add the egg, warm water, and the previously melted butter. Knead until the dough no longer sticks to your hands.
  4. If necessary, add a little flour. Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a cloth and leave to rise until it doubles in volume.
  5. Dust the work surface with flour. Then briefly knead the dough and divide it into equal parts—their number depends on how many challah loaves you want to make.
  6. We suggest dividing it into 2 parts to get two large challahs, into 4 parts to get four medium challahs and into about 8 parts, if you'd like to bake mini challahs for children.
  7. From one portion of dough, roll 3 ropes and braid them into a plait. Remember to tuck the ends underneath.
  8. Repeat until you have shaped all the braids.
  9. Remove the oven baking sheets and line them with parchment paper, dust with flour, then place the braids on them. Leave the prepared challahs to rise again (approx. 20 min), covering them with a cloth.
  10. In the meantime, preheat the oven, and when the dough is ready, start baking at 180 ℃ until browned.
Enjoy! ... homemade is better!
