The vinometer (sascharometer) is an essential device for a quick and precise determination of how much sugar is in your wine batch or brewer’s wort. The vinometer is calibrated in the Balling degrees (°Blg) - 1°Blg corresponds to approximately 10g of sugar in 1L of juice (must). The test tube is made of glass and has a flat bottom.
For convenience, the ranges of recommended sugar concentrations at the individual stages of wine preparation are marked with colours:
- before the fermentation begins, the sugar concentration should not exceed 22°Blg - pink area
- as soon as more doses of sugar are added during fermentation, the vinometer indications should not exceed 16°Blg - yellow area
- the reading at the final fermentation stage for dry and semi-sweet wines should be between - green area
This areometer also allows for the indirect determination of the alcoholic strength of wine, through simple calculations.
Instructions:
To make a measurement, fill in the test tube with a small amount of fluid free of particulates and gas bubbles. The amount of liquid should be enough to enable the test tube float to move freely without touching the container walls. The sugar concentration value is shown by the upper meniscus of the fluid.
