Before bottling the wine its is recommended to disinfect the bottles. Thanks to the concavity of their bottoms, these bottles are excellent for storing homemade wine, making it easier for the presumptive sediment to remain on the bottom. The inner diameter of the bottle neck is 18.3 mm. Thus, the list of perfectly fitting corks is as follows – when using a manual corker: cone- and cylinder-shaped corks with diameter of 22×38; when using a lever corker: natural and agglomerated cylinder-shaped corks with dimensions of 24×38, as well as cone-shaped corks with dimensions of 21×16 or 23×18, recommended for short periods of ageing. Tips that may come in handy:
- wine to be bottled should be fine (clear);
- it is not recommended to pour wine to bottles made of white glass, as it is possible that light may cause their content to turn brown;
- the bottles that we intended to use for bottling wine should be disinfected (to this end, it is best to use 70% spirits or 2-3% potassium metabisulphite solution: 20-30 g of metabisulphite per 1 L of water);
- prior to corking the bottles, the corks should be immersed in boiling water for a minute – thanks to that, they will become more flexible;
- the bottles should be filled by decanting the wine from the demijohn using a siphon tube - the tube should be flushed in advance with a disinfectant. It is necessary to minimise the time of contact between the wine and air;
- the bottles that are intended for long-term storage should be filled nearly to the full, with only 1-2 cm of free space left, and in case of wine to be pasteurised that space should be a bit larger, about 4 cm.
- corked bottles should be stored in horizontal position – so that the wine keeps moistening the cork. This will ensure proper gas exchange, and airtightness.
